Permeability

DefinitionSoil permeability measures the time ( ml/sec) it takes for water to flow through the soil pores. The soil matrix is made up of a variety of mineral and organic particles which can impede waters journey through the profile. Sand particles are easier for water to maneuver through the pore spaces while clay particles because of their flat shape and electrically charge state has a more difficult time making it way through the matrix of particles, in other words, sand is more permeable that clay.

DefinitionSoil Porosity is the amount or percentage of pore space in a volume of soil. The amount of porosity in a soil depends on the minerals that make up the soil and the amount of sorting that occurs within the soil structure. For example, a sandy soil will have larger porosity than silty sand, because the silt will fill in the gaps between the sand particles. But it would a lower permeability because the water would have a "harder" time getting through because there would be less space for it to maneuver. So it key to understand that Porosity and Permeability are inversely related, if a soil has a higher percentage of Porosity then it would be lower in Permeability.
