Soil Profiles and HorizonsA soil horizon makes up a distinct layer of soil. The horizon runs roughly parallel to the soil surface and has different properties and characteristics than the adjacent layers above and below. The soil profile is a vertical section of the soil that depicts all of its horizons.

To begin your assignment watch the VDO entitled "Purdue Agronomy Soil ...." (see below in Video section). Click on the button above to open the website entitled SoilWeb (http://casoilresource.lawr.ucdavis.edu/gmap/). While there click on the menu button in the upper left hand corner and go to "Zoom to Location"and enter WCC address (2300 E Gibson Rd, Woodland, CA 95776) in the rectangular location box and press the return key on your keyboards (see image 1) You should see WCC and a series of map lines that delineate soil boundaries (see the screen shot of the map image that you should see). Click on the soil series labeled "Yb" (see image 2) and a series of soil series names should appear on the upper left corner click on "Yolo" (see image 3). Answer the questions on the form below.

Level 2 Elaborate: How are horizons in soil formed
Watch the VDO entitled "Soil and Soil Dynamics" (see above) after you have finished either make a VDO of you explaining how soil horizons are made or using a voice recording app make an audio file and send it to your instructor's email. If you have a computer with a mic you can also make your recording on a website called Vacroo (http://vocaroo.com). Tutorial for using the site is on the right.

When you are finished with the VDO and reading, complete the form entitled, "Soil Horizons and Profiles". Don't forget to click on the submit button to turn in your assignment.
